Directed and starred by Clint Eastwood in 1995 and with Meryl Streep’s moving performance, this film is much more than an extra-marital affair. This film is about life itself and the choices we make.
Francesca is an Italian housewife living with her husband and two teenage children in the Iowa countryside. She feels her life is stuck with a decision made many years before when she met her now husband while still living in Italy. Now, although her life is not bad, she feels something missing. Her monotony and boredom disappears when Robert, a lost photographer, ends up at her doorstep looking for a certain bridge. After this brief encounter, their lives change forever.
All of the above is revealed to her grown up children after her death many years after the event. Her writings kept secret all those years make them think and ponder life’s certainties.
The spotless acting by Streep and Eastwood is a major added bonus to this good story that keeps your interest until the last minute.
This well-crafted movie makes us reflect upon the meaning of fidelity, loyalty, commitment, life, but most of all, love.
